Meat Boy (12.9Mb), Meat Boy Map Pack (13.5Mb) - Discretion Advised for both games!
Meat Boy is the free prequel to ‘Super Meat Boy’ and Meat Boy Map Pack is a standalone version of Meat Boy just with 70 of the best user custom levels. When gore is really fun! Both play extremely well with the Map Pack version getting notably difficult quite (or very!) quickly! You can play both online, but I have provided links to offline versions that you can download and keep.
The evil Dr. Fetus has kidnapped your sweet girlfriend from right in front of you. Although he is a mere foetus in a jar, his trickery is unsurpassed. It is up to you to rescue Band-aid girl from this maniac. Chase them through the levels, doing your best to keep your bleeding body away from danger. You only need to beat 3 of every 5 levels to advance to the next series of levels. You can skip levels by pressing ‘Esc’ and exiting to the level menu. Unlock extra characters by collecting band aids. Use L and R ‘Arrow’ keys to walk and press the ‘Spacebar’ to jump. Repeat pressing the ‘Spacebar’ while holding L/R keys to repeat jump, eg up walls.
You play as a rather acrobatic slab of meat lad who dashes from place to place to try to complete each level. It may not be for the very squeamish, as he leaves a trail of blood behind as he jumps, slides, dashes and sticks to walls. Watch out for rotating blades (meat slices, anyone?) and similar items that do more harm than good, and projectiles that can cause you very serious injuries. Salt and spikes will add to your wounds while lava lakes will ensure your being very well done, in fact barbecued to a crisp or frazzle! Some levels have the screen scrolling upwards - and you do not want to get caught off-screen.
You’ll quickly have to learn new tricks such as bouncing upwards off walls and rebounding (mostly upwards) if you are going to complete levels. Some of the levels are very ingeniously creative (and sometimes mighty difficult!). It truly is a gaming masterpiece with some of the most challenging and inventive levels you’ll ever play. Laugh or cry (mostly the latter!) you’ll be rewarded by the most engrossing challenges, that you will truly enjoy for having beaten the level (or is that shrink back in frightened defeat - as in how on earth is that done?!). The replay value is immense.
In Meat Boy, the 56 levels are split into four stages, and completing the game unlocks 10 extra expert levels. Hidden in some stages and levels are sometimes difficult to get pink bands (dropped by your girlfriend as clues?) which when you collect enough for a badge, awards you with a new character; - though you deserve these rewards, given how hard they are to get! There’s the added bonus of an easy-to-use level editor accessed from the main menu.
Incidentally, the levels are graded easy, medium, hard, extreme and 'downright near' impossible. It is rumoured that some levels in the Map Pack version have only been completed by their authors! Technically 'possible' and the actuality of trying and beating some levels can be very much two different things!
The game plays nearly full-screen in XP, Vista or Win 7, with Macromedia Flash Player (resize the window). I accept totally, no responsibility for wrecked keyboards or wrecked nerves! Yes, the games and levels are that good! The graphics are cool and the music as you might expect is hugely annoying!
If you haven’t played before, you’ll be better trying the main game before progressing to the Map Pack version, as the latter starts off really quite difficult. If you can complete 30 of the 70 Map Pack version levels, you’re doing incredibly well! Oh and yes, some ( - all!) of the levels seem to have been designed to be maddeningly infuriating, and all that blood seems to make the walls even more slippery!
They are amazing and brilliant games. You’ll have to play Meat Boy right through before you make your own mind up if the spilt hot coffee ending is in any way controversial/very funny or not. The custom user levels in the Map Pack version are every bit the equal and sometimes better even if that’s possible than in the main game!
Stupendous fun and all that! (Self-inflicted gratuitous violence absolutely guaranteed!)

Footnote - General comment about site-locked flash games - not those above! ------ Imho only. -------
(I am not amused at the few online flash game developers who continue to force people to visit their site by site-locking otherwise free games, which mean they can’t be played if the Internet is down, or on a bus or train, or on holiday away from an Internet connection! - I know these sorts of developers ‘wish’ to prevent their free games being ‘pirated’ by other sites but they do so at everyone else’s severe inconvenience! Especially as the games intros clearly state the developer site, hence my stating that they use this tactic to force visitors to their sites. Thankfully that’s not the case here with these two games!).
