Week 150 - Good Games to Grab - Damsel (2D adventure)

Well, what do you know, the fair maiden has gotten herself locked in the top of a high tower (again?) and if she doesn’t escape by nightfall, she’ll be (never guess what!) forced to marry the evil wizard Dorkus, who quite truthfully, doesn’t sound too much on the bright side! Sounds familiar? Well, you get a voiced-over version for your trouble and although quite a short adventure it’s all good fun while it lasts!

The poor damsel is depending on you, and there’s even a walkthrough if you get stuck. A fate worse than death awaits the fair lady should you fail to succeed, and not manage to rescue her in time! As for whether you’ll earn or deserve her favour, you’ll just have to take your chance and wait and see!

It even ‘rips-off’ other adventure games and some of the voice acting is extremely funny. It has a multi-layered hint system built-in to assist the puzzler-challenged types out there, which is a boon if you find extending your logic in obscure directions much or even mildly too taxing!

As it happens, the puzzles are mostly straightforward, though perhaps just needing a bit of lateral, or is that very sideways (or twisted!) thinking! More of a gentle mental walk or stroll in the park, rather than a full gym mental work-out!

It's a point and click adventure, read 'Ye Olde' instructions in the game folder. It plays windowed or full-screen in XP and Win 7 and should run in Vista (right click game exe and click 'run as admistrator').

It has excellent graphics and is more than well worth getting for the voiced-over dialogue! Who knows, you might even enjoy playing the adventure!

Nope, looks like a hard drive failure. Bang goes most of my game saves plus a load of data and images I'd not got around to backing up. Hardly got any warning on this one either. :(

Hi Idunno, I can't even access it now. The problems started on Sunday evening when I was playing a coop game (Kane & Lynch 2) with some giveawayoftheday friends. The computer just died on me during one of the levels we were playing and when it re-booted. I wasn't able to reconnect to the internet; but at that time I could still access my operating system. The following day when I went to boot the computer up it just kept cycling through the boot sequence. I'd neglected to turn on my external fans that day, so I'm presuming it overheated because the weather was very muggy and hot with no wind, so the study was uncomfortably hot. There had been two computers running all day with none of the external fans that I usually turn on. I use a midi case, which I've been meaning to exchange for a full size case because the insides have very little room for air circulation. I have five seperate hard drives plus a dirty great hulking graphics card plus other perhipherals, so all the space is taken up. Cables are tied and routed, but there is still precious little space left for proper circulation, which is why I use two external fans to blow the exhaust air away from the computers.

Hi Whiterabbit,
I suggest you hang on to the hard drive. You may be able to save the hardware or some of the data on it yet. When it comes to preventing overheating, I have an ancient tower case which I too keep cool using an external fan.
A custom-built air-conditioned booth would be far cooler, tho.

My eldest has built himself a water cooling system for his computer. It's almost silent running!

With your hard drive, there are professional data recovery services but these tend to charge about £60 (ouch!) to remount the drive and extract the data. Usually, it tends to be either a read head or electronics failure, and if the hard drive didn't die with a loud crunching noise, the disk itself isn't usually damaged. It's only when there is a lot of noise, meaning that the disk surface has scratched that data is irrecoverable, unless the disk itself became very hot indeed, which is probably unlikely!

The disc gave no warning of breaking down, so you are probably correct about the surface being okay. I will be keeping the disk just in case one day we are able to purchase our own repair kits. I have another drive that I tried to connect while the computer was still running a few years ago, (being lazy) and that got fried due to an electrical discharge. I also have a couple of old 40Gb drives that I don't use anymore and thought I may be able to exchange the actual discs, though I realize that at this time I'd probably fail. :)

I've suggested to my wife that when we move we should get a portable air con unit for the study as there's usually at least two computers running at any time. It's always the hottest room in the house despite the main windows always being open when the computers are on.

WR, seems like your situation fits the requirement for the following possible remedy. Give it a try if you've given up all hope:

1. Remove the hard drive from the computer.
2. Place the hard drive inside of a zip top freezer bag. (don't buy a
cheap bag.)
3. Place the wrapped hard drive inside of ANOTHER zip top freezer bag.
(yes, you need to do this)
4. Place the double wrapped hard drive in the coldest part of your
freezer.
5. Leave the hard drive in the freezer for 12 hours at least. You want
it good and cold! (see figure 2 below)
6. Once very chilled, install the hard drive in your computer and
start pulling off data. Begin with the most valuable data.
7. At some point, the hard drive will fail again. When it does, mark
the last successfully copied data, pull out the hard drive, double wrap
it again and stick it in the Chill Chest for another 12 hours.
8. You may need to do this a number of times to get all the data you
want, or until the hard drive stops working completely.

FWIW, Wabbit, I have done the freezer thing. May take a few times and you have to work fast. But It DOES work!!!

Coming back to Damsel, it's the first of these sort of games that I've downloaded and played and I can thoroughly recommend it. I think it's the first time that I've sat in front of the computer literally with tears of laughter rolling down my face! The voice acting was just crazy. The whole thing reminded me in a way of the Monty Python sketches. (And it proved to be quite tricky as well.) Thanks, Chazzo, for pointing this one out.
