Each part has it's own function and will affect the way a ship flies (or doesn't).So strap yourself in, and get ready to try some Rocket Science!

The game is currently under heavy development. This means the game will be improved on a regular basis, so be sure to check back for new updates.
Right now, KSP is in Alpha state, but we want you to try it out and have fun with it. The first versions are free to download and play, and will remain so forever.

Nice one Devildog - I can see I'm going to really enjoy this one. Great find. i'll add it to the free games project if that's okay with you? :) Here's some information about the game. I’ve taken all the information and images about this game (apart from the videos which I found via You tube) from HERE

I've had to update the images due to picdepict closing down. Most of the images you see are from the commercial version. So the free version may not look as polished as some of the images you see below, but they will still convey an idea of what the game looks like. It's been a while since i pl;ayed through the free version as I bought into the alpha as soon as Devildog posted details of this game.

The Game/Simulation:

Kerbal Space Program is a multi-genre game where the player can create his own space program.

In KSP, you must build a space-worthy craft, capable of flying it's crew out into space, without killing them.At your disposal is a collection of parts, which must be assembled to create a functional ship. Each part has it's own function and will affect the way a ship flies (or doesn't).So strap yourself in, and get ready to try some Rocket Science!

Main Features:

•The Vehicle Assembly Building. allows players to build spacecraft out of any imaginable combination of parts.

•Fully-fledged, Physics-based Flight Simulation ensures everything will fly (and crash) as it should.

•Procedural Terrain delivers detailed terrain at a vast scale. The Kerbal Planet is 600km in radius!

•Mod-enabled, allows players to create new content and modify the game.

•Ship systems. Keep an eye out for engine temperatures and fuel levels, and try not to explode.

•Build ships with multiple stages, and jettison parts away as they burn out.

•Full control over the staging sequence allows for complex ships and advanced functionality.

The Future:

KSP is still under development, so many things are not yet as they should be. We are working hard to be constantly improving the game however, and it will be regularly updated with bug fixes and new content, so make sure to check back for new versions. We are also always listening to feedback from the players, and we welcome ideas and suggestions.

On my first attempt, I ignored the tutorial, throwing caution to the wind. As I anticipated, lift-off into the statosphere was picture-perfect and on the return flight, the final touch-down was earth-shattering.

The game has just been updated. It will be worth following the game for updates as at some point we will have to pay for it (though previous versions will always remain free. So it'll be wortyh getting the best free update before they start to charge for this game. (personally I intend buying it once ? they ask for money).

OK, this is strange. Not sure if it's me or the website. 3 days ago I was there http://kerbalspaceprogram.com/ since I cut n pasted about the update for the pre order but NOW I can't get the page to open. It keeps timing out. I have tried both Firefox and (shudder) Internet Explorer. I even tried the hubby's PC..no go.

I used http://www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com/ and it says it is UP. I have cleaned cookies, cache, temp files..you name it. I have disabled AdBlocker, disabled the web browsing function in my firewall, Checked MSE, SuperAntispyware, WinPatrol until I am blue in the face. Rebooted twice.

There is nothing new on their Twitter or Facebook page.

Any suggestions?

@delenn13: I tried from your link and I could not get it to work either, but it asked if I wanted to be redirected to http://www.kerbalspaceprogram.com. I did and went straight to it. I noticed after that there is some 'extra' things in your url link; so, I would try just typing it in manually and seeing what happened.

TO ALL:
While at the page I noticed that they are offering for a limited time that if you donate $7 (or more) USD then you have preordered the game and get all version from now and forever (?) free. They do not say but sounds like they are really wanting to finish this, but funding is running low. I won't lie; I donated to help.. well, and to get the game too of course. I enjoy what I have played and would like to really see the finished product. Hey, $7 for a good (unfinished, but playable) game isn't bad, but including when it is finished too is an awesome deal in my opinion.

I have hand typed it, used the one from the FB page and Twitter..NOTHING!!! Still times out. I have tweeted my dilemma to them and written it on FB also. Let's see what happens. They will be the ones losing $14 bucks..if nothing is done.

It's is just strange..I WAS there..and NOW with no warning..I can't.

This is still being updated and can now be purchased on Steam as part of the early access program. They did give out Steam keys for those who had funded the alpha, but you had to claim them by the end of March, so I missed out as I didn't see the thread until late April.

I did post in the forums asking whether it was still possible to get a steam key, but never got a response so ended up buying a key via Steam even though I'd already bought the game when it was in alpha. Still, the fun I'v ehad with this game so far it was worth the extrea expense. :)

Their Customer Service sucks. I posted over a year ago that I needed help..on their FB page..no response. They lost out on 2 subscriptions because of it.

The game has been upgraded to version 2.
The game is not free. Allegedly the PC release has a free demo, if you can find it.
There are now versions for the game consoles.

Ten years later, the original release has grown into a very popular game with over 87 thousand workshop items available HERE if you own the game on Steam. It's a great game with loads of scope for creating your own space ship and scenarios. I would have loved this as a young teenager (during the Apollo missions to the moon; I remember watching Neil Armstrong stepping onto the moon while at school; our form teacher had set up a TV at the front of the class {right in front of me}).

Since it's release on Steam seven years ago it has had two large DLC's released as well. These are the Kerbal Space Program: Making History Expansion

and the Kerbal Space Program: Breaking Ground Expansion

The base game is 75% off at the moment and the two DLC's are on sale with 50% off until 12th May 22 HERE

I got the game cheap as I went for the crowd funding option a couple of years before it was officially released. I'm hoping to get the second one, when it's released. It looks amazing.

To paraphrase a Tiktoker, it's ironic that a player can send astronauts into outer space –or to their doom (tm)– by building and launching spacecraft without prior knowledge in physics or rocket science.

Personally I found physics boring while at school, I much preferred Chemistry and Geology. Your comment made me smile. I remeber watching Armstong step on the moon while at school. My form teacher had a TV set up for us all to watch the historic event.

Now I can imagine what it was like by playing the various games that emulate the Apollo missions.

Chemistry because of the colourful pyrotechnics and explosions you could create (plus my dad bought me a decent chemistry set) and for Geology, the lustrous colours reflected in some of the minerals we found while on geology field trips e.g. we went to an old open cast lead mine (Cliviger Gorge) not far from where I lived. I remember finding a piece of Galena that when broken open to reveal the untarnished fresh rhomboid shapes with iridescent colours reflecting off the surfaces really grabbed my attention. I'd often go back to the mines and dig for better samples of the mineral during my early youth. I decided I wanted to be a geo-chemist at that point, but ended up being an environmental scientist (as one of the many hats I've worn throughout my life e.g. postman, soldier, telecommunications engineer, electro-mechanical engineer, photographer (weddings), research assistant (while doing my post grad work) teacher of biology, chemistry, physics, geography and math and a nurse before my debilitating accident back in 2005.

As for physics, in my 20's following my army life I studied some physics with the Open University (before I went to a full time university) and loved nuclear physics i.e. quarks strangeness and charm, hadrons, leptons, mesons and all that stuff.

Though I think maybe a track called Quark Strangeness & Charm from the Hawklords only album titled Hawklords had a little to do with that as well (Hawklords were an offshoot of Hawkwind, one of my all time favourite bands that have been around since the late 60's and are still touring to this day; though only one of the original line up, Dave Brock remains.

I've been collecting game son steam that relate to simulations of real space travel; most are VR, which is a shame a sI still don't have a VR head set, just can't justify the cost of a decent one yet. I've been looking on eBay for second hand ones, but so far haven't found one in my price range.

The following are space sims that feature moon landings, re-entry into the earths atmosphere etc:
