I've had my computer for over 4 years now (April of 2007). Today, for the first time, one of the core files that was part of the pre-loaded system was flagged as malware. My computer is HP so a lot of you may also have this file - HP\Bin\killit.exe.
I'm not sure what the file does but Avira confirmed (after I filed a possible false positive report on the file) that it is malware. It's a low-risk file but can be used to lower the security of your computer.
At the moment, the file is "deactivated" by the addition of ".VIR" at the end of the file name.
Considering the file was last modified in 1999, I'm surprised that it took this long for the anti-virus to complain about it.
Just a warning for other HP users out there (and possibly other makers) that this file is hiding in your system.
If anybody has an HP that has the file and the computer is still in warranty, I would really appreciate it if you could contact HP on the issue and see what they say. I'm out of warranty and I'm not about to pay them $20 to tell me why they included malware on my computer.
