yWriter is a free novel writing program for authors. It allows you to break your novel into chapters and scenes within chapters. You can reorder scenes using drag and drop, and you can print out a number of reports (summary, synopsis, scene list, work schedule). Gives you a running word count per scene and chapter, and the built-in editor auto-saves your work.
yRead will load a plain text (TXT) or HTML file and display it in a single-column, resizable window. Then it will read the file to you out loud, using human speech.
Editing flight plans and aircraft by hand can be time consuming and prone to errors. There's something about editing a 2.5 meg text file in Wordpad which just doesn't appeal to me, so I set out to write something which would allow me to do what I wanted - namely, to populate deserted airfields with a variety of interesting aircraft.
With BookDB you can enter all your books with author, category, publisher etc and print them out in a variety of formats. Why would you need such a thing? Well, if you're always going to book sales and buying bargains only to get home and find you've doubled up, take a printout with you! BookDB has a super-condensed print mode so you'll need a magnifying glass, but at least it'll save a tree or two.
I'd recommend this program to anybody writing on any kind of project! I actually use it for writing on my PhD Dissertation. The interface is clean and intuitive, but more importantly, the software really helps in structuring your work without getting lost in hundreds of files, notes, names, ideas etc.
Plus: it not only keeps track of your progress, you can set deadlines and see clearly which parts of your work need to be done; count words and repetitions, tag chapters, create a storyboard to get a visual idea of the line you're following and its overall "density" etc.
The software lets you list, add and edit characters with a short description of the persona & biography and an extra note to outline its goals and its place in the setting. Applying this to the items relevant to my field of study for the first time gives me the feeling of seeing through and getting a grip on the subject!
Enjoy writing!
